Will the Dropbox privacy storm abate?
The storm began not in a teacup, but in a Dropbox, and it was a doozy.
The Web-based file-hosting service that allows users to share files and photos across the Internet courtesy of cloud computing is still sweeping up from a summer squall that was set off with nothing more spectacular than some poorly chosen words.
Dropbox set the leaves in motion in June when it sought to tweak its terms of service to better explain its position on a range of platforms, including the thorny business of its ownership of the data it hosts. But its reworked explanation just served to muddy the scene, arguably further damaging cloud computing technology’s more widespread adoption. (more…)

Predicting the effects of new technology can be a challenge
Although it’s still early days, from a long-range historical point of view, the cloud has actually hovered above our various computer-powered preoccupations for a good few years now. Adoption rates for this game-changer motor ever forward, with bugs being identified and addressed, and capabilities being increasingly celebrated.
But it’s worth noting that we remain far from an end point in our understanding of, and appreciation for, this paradigm-shifting newcomer to our daily lives. The Microsoft-produced white paper, The Economics of the Cloud (TK), offers some insight on how this new age might evolve, and urges its proponents to take the long view and see the underlying economics as having the biggest impact on long term take-up rates. Professional services firms with an interest in technology, take note: The lines distinguishing one C-suite dweller from another are pretty damn blurred on the question of who enjoys — and deserves — authority over IT purchases. This makes it more important than ever that the CFO and CIO establish parameters around IT decisions at their firm.
All of this has come to increasing light with new research that reveals a powerful lack of faith among CFOs for the CIOs with whom they share an executive bathroom. (more…)

So Canada Post employees have gone on strike. Having failed to reach a deal with the crown corporation, the postal union workers have elected to walk off the job in a revolving series of walkouts that began midnight Thursday in Winnipeg.
Big fat, hairy deal.
Without meaning to sound cavalier, the fact of the matter is that the reality of a postal strike in 2011 is a far cry from the reality of a postal strike in, say, 1991. Back then, such an event would have been cause for genuine concern, as a whole host of integral business functions would grind to an unavoidable halt. (more…)

A recent article in industry trade journal CRM Buyer got us thinking. In it, the author tackles the surprisingly complicated subject of CRM systems. He wisely argues in favour of a comprehensive approach that acknowledges the importance of treating this business essential with kid gloves.
We couldn’t agree more.
The decision-making process that provides the steep and rocky path to CRM certainty is rife with potential for error. (more…)

Remember Y2K, the much-anticipated and wildly-feared turn of the millennium that sent us all filling our bathtubs and plundering the grocery stores for canned goods? If your ERP system does too, it may be time for an overhaul. (more…)

While the weather outside might regularly indicate otherwise, spring is upon us. And with its predictable arrival comes the reflexive impulse for seasonal cleaning. This explains the preponderance of conversations of late about lemon-scented disinfectants, all-purpose tile scrubbers — and vulnerability management.
Just as the melting snow reveals the canine deposits from the winter that’s passed, engaging in a vulnerability management exercise will uncover all the crap that’s collected beneath your superficial day-to-day operations. (more…)

Aspirations of greatness notwithstanding, you’re still a fairly small organization at this point in your development. Your employee count is modest, your daily operations straightforward, your technical requirements few.
Only the big guys, surely, stand to benefit from the complex computerized infrastructures that come by way of installing sophisticated ERP systems. Or so you tell yourself as you start yet another day with the technical support of nothing grander than a basic accounting program. (more…)

When the dust clears, it becomes apparent that there are two categories of service providers in the world: those who make the messes, and those who clean the messes up.
It’s a frustrating situation for those of us in the latter camp, though we really shouldn’t complain. After all, the preponderance of shoddy ERP implementations being performed out there provides us with a solid, serious income stream via our efforts to put these waylaid victims back on track.
