Microsoft is extending the Windows 8.1 Update requirement to June 10.
Now, customers have an extra 30 days to update their devices to the new version – those that do not do so will no longer receive security updates.
Users running Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1 will be automatically updated. To check if the new version has been installed, users should go to the Start screen and see if a Search button appears next to their account name. Otherwise, instructions for a manual update can be found on Microsoft’s website.
With the new Windows 8.1 Update, the layout of the home screen has been enhanced allowing users to easily find and access what they’re looking for. Users can now shut down their PC quickly and search right from the Start screen – the Power and Search buttons appear at the upper-right corner on the Start screen, next to the account picture.
Certain devices will now also be able to boot to the desktop as the default setting and on the task bar, users can pin apps such as Xbox Music, Skype, Facebook, and their favorite websites and easily switch between them. Users can also access the task bar from anywhere by moving their mouse to the bottom edge of their screen.
Also on the Start screen, if users’ right-click on an app, a context menu will pop up showing users what they can do with a specific app, like unpinning it from the Start menu, pinning it to the task bar, changing the app size or uninstalling it.
Furthermore, with the new Windows 8.1 Update, the Windows Store is pinned to the task bar by default so users can easily discover new apps. And after installing them, users will receive a message at the lower-left corner of the Start screen that shows them what they recently installed.
For businesses customers, the update includes extra features that improve compatibility with Internet Explorer, extends policy settings for mobile devices, and easily installs apps for quick deployment.
Full details of the Windows 8.1. Update can be found on the Microsoft website.
